Lactulose Syrup (667 mg/mL) is a hyperosmotic laxative used to relieve constipation and may also be used in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy by helping to reduce blood ammonia levels. No prescription is required for this product in Canada.
Important Warnings
Before Taking Lactulose
- Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to lactulose or any other medications.
- Disclose all prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially antacids, antibiotics such as neomycin (Mycifradin), and other laxatives.
- Tell your doctor if you have diabetes or require a low-lactose diet.
- Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
- If you are scheduled for surgery or undergoing colon/rectal tests, inform your healthcare provider that you are using lactulose.
Dosage Guidelines
Chronic Constipation (Adults): 15 mL orally once daily.
Acute Constipation: 15 mL orally once daily, continued until normal bowel function resumes.
Hepatic Encephalopathy: Initial dose: 30 mL orally 3 times daily, or 300 mL diluted in 700 mL of water or saline as an enema, retained for 30 to 60 minutes every 4 to 6 hours. Maintenance dose: 30 to 45 mL orally 3 times daily.
